05 — Behind the rooms
Bathrooms are small rooms with a lot to get right. The layout, waterproofing, tiling, tapware, vanity and ventilation are all fixed in place. We design bathrooms and ensuites so they stay calm to use and easy to clean, and so they hold up in Gold Coast humidity.

Before the first drawing
☐ Who uses the room, and at what time of day
☐ Shower, bath or both, and how much space each needs
☐ Where the plumbing sits now, and whether it can move
☐ Storage for daily items as well as spares
☐ Natural light, privacy and window placement
☐ Extraction fan location and airflow
☐ Floor falls, slip resistance and threshold details
☐ Tile sizes and how they set out on each wall
Renovating homeowners replacing a dated bathroom or ensuite who want the new layout to fix what never worked, not just repeat it with new tiles. This often sits inside a wider home renovation design.
New build clients choosing between builder-standard selections and a bathroom planned properly, with niches, vanity heights and lighting fixed while the plans can still change. See new build interior design.
Households with changing needs, from young children to ageing parents, where walk-in showers, grab-rail blocking and clear floor space matter as much as the finishes do.
Material & design guide
Walk-in or screened showers, a freestanding or built-in bath, single or double basins, and a toilet placed out of the line of sight from the door.
Large-format tiles for fewer grout lines, textured finishes where floors get wet, and set-outs planned so cuts land in corners rather than on a feature wall.
Wall-mounted or deck-mounted mixers, finishes that suit coastal air, and wall-hung or floor-standing vanities with drawers sized for what you actually store. Vanity cabinetry can tie into custom joinery design.
Extraction placed where steam gathers, operable windows where possible, moisture-resistant board and paint, and sealed stone or porcelain in place of surfaces that hold damp. Mirror and vanity lighting is planned alongside, with guidance from lighting & finishes.

Step 1
We talk through how the room is used and review the existing plumbing, windows and constraints. Our design process explains how each stage connects.
Step 2
We test fixture positions, shower size and storage against clearances and plumbing. Space planning principles apply here too.
Step 3
Tiles, stone, tapware, vanity finishes and lighting are chosen together as one palette through colour & material selection.
Step 4
Elevations, tile set-outs and a fixtures schedule give your builder and trades a clear brief. See design documentation.
Yes. A single bathroom or ensuite can be a project on its own. We still look at how it connects to the bedroom and hallway so the finishes sit comfortably with the rest of the home.
Sometimes. Moving fixtures can transform a cramped room, but it affects plumbing and floor construction. We show options with and without the change so you can weigh up the benefit against the building work.
Porcelain, sealed stone, moisture-resistant cabinetry and hardwearing tapware finishes generally perform well, especially when paired with good extraction. Our Bathroom Design Guide for Coastal Homes goes into more detail.
Our drawings and schedules are prepared so your builder and trades can price and build from them. Get in touch through our contact page to discuss your situation.
